The story behind Zara’s Golden Everlasting Daisies

Zara’s Golden Everlastings began as an addition to our established ‘Lucinda’s Everlastings,’ which was named after our first daughter in 2003. Following the arrival of our daughter Zara in 2006, we started production in 2010 and successfully produced our first crop of these stunning golden blooms.
Since then, these seeds have served as a wonderful complement to our pink and whites. As an Australian native termed ‘Showy Golden Everlastings’, they are waterwise, easy to grow, and provide vibrant, low-maintenance color to any garden. Golden Everlastings are a rare species, making them a truly special addition to our collection.

Flowering and Care

Zara’s Golden Everlastings produce bright, sturdy blooms that open in full sun and close at night or during overcast and rainy conditions. Stems are strong and the flowers make excellent cut or dried arrangements, lasting at least a month in a vase. Once established, the plants require very little maintenance, tolerate poor soil, drought, and frost, and are excellent for attracting bees and other pollinators. After flowering, allow the plants to self-seed to ensure a colourful display the following season.

Perfect For Gardens

These are perfect for native gardens, arid environments, garden beds, driveways, rockeries, or as a vibrant pot plant. With their fast growth, long-lasting blooms, and ability to self-seed, Zara’s Everlastings are a reliable, beautiful choice for gardeners of all skill levels.

Getting Started with Your Everlastings

Grow a vibrant display of everlasting daisies with a little planning and care. Follow these simple steps for choosing the right location, sowing your seeds, and looking after your plants to enjoy a long-lasting, colourful garden.

Before You Sow

  1. Choose a sunny spot in your garden, or place pots where they’ll get plenty of sunlight.
  2. Choose a well drained location. Everlasting plants can tolerate a degree of intermittent waterlogging, however it is important to ensure good drainage in the stages of germination and establishment.
  3. If planting in pots, fill with a good quality potting mix.
  4. Remove all weeds and clear the area.
  5. Loosen the soil if it’s compacted to help roots grow easily.
  6. Make sure the soil is moist before sowing.
  7. Sow at a time suited to your local climate. See our sowing table below.

Sowing Your Seeds

  1. Scatter seeds directly onto the soil surface at a rate of 1 gram per 1 square metre.
  2. Gently rake or pat down the soil so seeds are just slightly covered.
  3. Water lightly after sowing.
  4. Protect seedlings from pets, pests (especially snails), and harsh weather until well established.

Best Months to Sow

Care Tips

  1. Germination usually takes 2–14 days, depending on the time of year and weather conditions.
  2. Keep an eye out for weeds and remove them as needed.
  3. If growing in pots, water regularly to prevent them drying out.
  4. At around 6 weeks, you can lightly fertilise with a general-purpose fertiliser (optional).
  5. To extend your flowering period, you can stagger your planting. Sprinkle more seeds over existing everlastings once they’ve germinated.
  6. Avoid overwatering, this can cause stems to rot and collapse.
  7. Don’t sow too thickly, overcrowded plants may grow spindly and weak.
  8. Avoid sowing too early in the season, plants may grow too tall and fall over before flowering.
  9. Everlastings will typically flower within 80–90 days after sowing.
  10. Once flowering has finished, remove the dead stalks and wait for the next season’s self-seeded seedlings to emerge.
